What does “thrifty” mean?
The word thrifty and the word thriving actually share the same root. Thrift can be defined as
- Wise economy in the management of money and other resources; frugality.
- Vigorous growth of living things, such as plants.
Thriving can be defined as
- To make steady progress; prosper.
- To grow vigorously; flourish.
The words both come from the Old Norse word thrfask, meaning to seize. When applied to personal finance, it normally means the wise use of what economic resources you have, a healthy robust scepticism towards consumerism and an interest in prospering financially, emotionally and physically.
