What to do when you lose your job

Losing your job can be distressing and challenging.

Losing your job increases stress and has been linked to mental health difficulties.

Thankfully there are some great, easy to follow guides available online that may come in handy.

The FLAC (Free Legal Advice Centre) have a quick checklist on their website for what to do when you lose your job:

  • Claim all your entitlements
  • Sign on immediately
  • Claim Rent Supplement or Mortgage Interest Supplement (MIS)
  • Check whether you have payment protection insurance
  • Do up your own budget
  • Contact the Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS)
  • Contact your creditors
  • Get legal advice and representation
  • Take care of any Mortgage arrears
  • Look into Training and Retraining

You can find the full list here.

There is also an excellent website provided by the Citizens Information Board at LosingYouJob.ie.

They have sections on rights and entitlements. You can also download a great PDF of the site contents which is a useful resource.
